Drupal vs. Joomla: Debate Heats Up

If you are a software developer, then you must know that an advanced version of Joomla has been released recently. And, this has clearly fuelled the Drupal vs. Joomla debate even further!

You have one group of Drupal loyalists who swear by the features and benefits of this open source content management system that is making waves all over. These Drupal enthusiasts are also getting support from many website owners, who are trying to optimize their websites by harnessing the advantages of Drupal. And, did I miss anyone...Oh! Of course, how can I forget? Drupal is also appealing to those who love toying with browser-based gaming websites. The open source content management portal is helping them categorize, organize, and upload more games into their websites, and that too - PRETTY EASILY!

So, that's the Drupal side of the story - but, this does not mean that Joomla fans are insignificant in number. Joomla is a very powerful open source CMS (content management system) and is finding a lot of admirers among personal homepage designers, complex web app developers, small businesses looking to increase their web presence, and so forth. Joomla is very effective and can easily manage almost every aspect of your website.

Drupal loyalists however, counter with quite a few good points, primary of which are:

  • Drupal followers firmly state that this CMS features a powerful templating system - the templates can be conveniently created out of any XHTML or CSS template; while Joomla templates do not have the capability to integrate other scripts into the website.
  • Drupal is an OpenID compliant system and can always facilitate any kind of user group, while Joomla doesn't possess this feature.
  • Drupal can work with MySQL, Postgres, and Apache - but, Joomla supports only MySQL and Apache.

However, at the end of the day whether you choose Drupal or Joomla - it strongly depends on your tastes, preferences, and budget!
